Republic Day (North Macedonia)

Republic Day is a public holiday in North Macedonia on August 2 each year. The holiday commemorates the Ilinden Uprising of 1903, organized by the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization against the Ottoman Empire, and the First Assembly of Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) in 1944 during World War II in Yugoslav Macedonia.

The Ilinden Uprising was an organized revolt against the Ottoman Empire, organized by the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization. The uprising lasted 3 months, from August 2, 1903, to November 1903. During the uprising, rebels established the Krusevo Republic. Although the republic existed for only 10 days, the republic was one of the first modern-day republics.

The First Assembly of the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) was convened underground on August 2, 1944. The most important decisions of the first assembly include proclaiming a Macedonian state and the official language of Macedonian. It laid the foundation of the later Socialist Republic of Macedonia, which remained one of the 6 constituent countries of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until it was dissolved in 1991.
