Revolution Day (North Macedonia)

Revolution Day, the day of the Macedonian Uprising against fascism, is a public holiday in North Macedonia, observed on October 11 each year. The holiday commemorates the beginning of the Macedonian resistance to the Axis forces in 1941.

The Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe. After World War I, North Macedonia became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. On April 6, 1941, the Axis forces invaded Yugoslavia from all sides and forced the unconditional surrender of Yugoslavia. Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Bulgaria then partitioned Yugoslavia. The Bulgarian army invaded the North Macedonia area on April 19, 1941, and occupied nearly all the modern-day North Macedonia.

Following the surrender, the communist-led Yugoslav Partisans movement was formed. On October 11, 1941, the armed insurgents from the Prilep Partisan Detachment attacked the Axis-occupied zones. The event was considered the beginning of the Revolution War. The War against the Axis lasted almost 4 years till mid-November 1944.
