National Foundation Day (South Korea)

National Foundation Day, also known as Gaecheonjeol, is a public holiday in South Korea, and it is observed on October 3 each year.

National Foundation Day celebrates the date of the formation of the first Korean state of Goiosen, the first Korean kingdom, which was established in 2333 BC by Dangun, the grandson of heaven. According to the legend, the son of the Lord of Heaven founded the City of God in the Baekdu Mountain and married a bear-woman, who gave birth to Dangun.

National Foundation Day was established as a national holiday in 1909 based on the traditional Korean lunar calendar, and fixed on October 3 of the Gregorian calendar in 1949.
