Memorial Day (South Korea)

Memorial Day is a public holiday in South Korea, and it is observed on June 6 each year.

Memorial Day commemorates those South Koreans who sacrificed their lives during the military services, including the Korean War and many other wars South Koreans fought over the years.

The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, while South Korea was supported by the United Nations. The war began on June 25, 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, and it ended on July 27, 1953 with approximately 3 millions war fatalities including civilians.

Memorial Day was first observed in South Korea in 1956, 3 years after the Korean War. On Memorial Day, a siren rings throughout the country at 10am, which is the time for people to stop their work and study and to keep silent for one minute to pray for those deceased in the military services.
