Rincon Day (Bonaire)

Rincon Day is a public holiday on the island of Bonaire, and it is observed on April 30 each year. The holiday is celebrated in the town of Rincon on the island.

There are two towns on the island of Bonaire: Rincon and Kralendijk, while Kralendijk is the capital city of the island of Bonaire. Rincon is one of the oldest settlements in the Dutch Caribbean, and it was established in the 16th century by the Spanish.

Europeans brought slaves to the islands and they cultivated dyewood and maize on the plantations. During the harvest season, the neighbors, relatives, and friends helped each other. To reward the help received, they set up events with music, dance, and food, which was gradually evolved into a large tradition called Simadan.

The Simadan takes place from February to April, and it culminates the largest celebration on April 30 named Rincon Day. Nowadays, tourism became the main economy on the island, but the tradition continued. Over the years, the celebration grew in popularity and became the biggest festival on the island.
