King's Day (Netherlands)

King's Day is a public holiday in the Netherlands, and it is observed on April 27 or April 26 if April 27 is a Sunday.

King's Day celebrates the birthday of Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, who was born on April 27, 1967. He acceded to the throne following his mother's abdication in 2013.

  • The holiday was initially observed on August 31, 1885, celebrating the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, and then changed to Queen's Day when she ascended to the throne in 1890;
  • Princess Wilhelmina's daughter, Juliana, ascended to the throne in 1948, and the holiday was moved to her birthday, April 30 from 1949;
  • Queen Juliana's daughter, Beatrix, ascended to the throne in 1980 and retained the celebration on April 30. Her birthday is on January 31;
  • Queen Beatrix's son, Willem-Alexander, ascended to the throne in 2013, and the holiday was moved to his birthday, April 27, 2014.
