Revolution Day (Mexico)

Revolution Day is a public holiday in Mexico, observed on the third Monday of November each year. The holiday marks the anniversary of the start of the Mexican Revolution, which was a revolution that included a sequence of armed struggles from 1910 to 1920.

The Mexican Revolution started in 1910 to overthrow the President of Mexico Porfirio Díaz, who had come to the presidency of Mexico in 1876 and served for 31 years with a short interregnum from 1880 to 1884.

In the 1910 election, Francisco I. Madero opposed Díaz, but Díaz arrested Madero before the election. After Madero escaped from prison, he issued the Plan of San Luis Potosí. He declared the election results fraudulent in that plan and called for Mexicans to rise against Díaz on November 20, 1910.

The Mexican Revolution led to the promulgation of the Constitution of 1917, which includes Mexicans' economic, social, and cultural rights.

November 20 was the original celebration date until 2005, and in 2006, Revolution Day changed to the third Monday of November.
