Peace Memorial Day

Peace Memorial Day, also known as the February 28 massacre, is a public holiday in Taiwan, observed on February 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the uprising in Taiwan on February 28, 1947, violently suppressed by the government and ended with thousands of deaths.

After World War II, the Allies ended the 50 years of Japanese control of Taiwan and handed administrative control to the Republic of China. The local people became resentful because of the corruption and the power abuse after the Kuomintang authorities took power on the island.

On the day before the incident, one officer fired on the angry crowd when the government caught a widow suspected of selling contraband cigarettes, which caused a person's death and led to a strike. Soldiers then fired on the demonstrators the next day. As things got worse, the government called for military reinforcements.
