National Flag Day (Liberia)

National Flag Day is a public holiday in Liberia, and it is observed on August 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the flag of Liberia on August 24, 1847.

Liberia is a country located in West Africa. In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the United States to settle free people of color in Africa because of racial discrimination. In 1822, the American Colonization Society (ACS) began sending free people of color to Liberia to establish a colony.

The settlers declared independence and promulgated a constitution on July 26, 1847. Liberia became Africa's first modern republic being claimed its independence. About one month after, the flag of Liberia was adopted on August 24, 1847. A committee of seven women chaired by Susannah Elizabeth designed the flag, and all of them were born in the United States.

The flag design contains 11 horizontal stripes alternating red and white, a white star on a blue field. The 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The white star represents the first independent republic in Africa, and the blue square represents the African continent. The Liberian flag resembles the United States flag because the settlers were from the United States.
