National Culture and Senior Citizens Day (Kiribati)

National Culture and Senior Citizens Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Kiribati. It is observed on the day before National Day.

The holiday celebrates the traditional culture and the importance of the country's senior citizens.

Kiribati is an independent island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. People inhabited the islands thousands of years ago, and the first European contact occurred in the 17th century. The Gilbert Islands became a British protectorate in 1892 and the crown colony with the Ellice Islands in 1916. On July 12, 1979, the Gilbert Islands gained independence as the Republic of Kiribati.

Over thousands of years, people with different backgrounds lived on the islands and developed their own culture and customs. They developed many folk music, dancing, and traditional cuisine in the past centuries.

On the other hand, Kiribati is one of the poor countries in the world, and many people, especially those senior citizens, may not have enough support and savings when they get old. National Culture and Senior Citizens Day commemorates the importance of senior citizens and reminds people of the importance of taking care of them.
