Human Rights Day (Kiribati)

Human Rights Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Kiribati. It is observed on December 11 each year.

The holiday commemorates when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1950. UDHR is a milestone document in the history of human rights, and it proclaims a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which everyone is entitled.

The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean, a group of 33 coral islands. Kiribati has a population of about 120,000, and over half live on the Tarawa atoll.

People inhabited the islands thousands of years ago, and the first European contact occurred in the 17th century. The Gilbert Islands became a British protectorate in 1892 and the crown colony with the Ellice Islands in 1916.

On July 12, 1979, the Gilbert Islands gained independence as the Republic of Kiribati. In 1999, Kiribati became a full member of the United Nations.
