Education Day (Kiribati)

Education Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Kiribati. The government will decide on the actual observation day each year, but it is on the day near October 5. The holiday is to celebrate education in Kiribati.

The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean and a group of 33 coral islands. Kiribati has a population of about 120,000, and over half live on the Tarawa atoll.

The education system in Kiribati mostly focuses on primary and Junior Secondary education, and the education from grade one to Junior Secondary for children from age 6 to 14 years old is free and compulsory.

There are only a few Senior Secondary schools on the islands. Children need to pay the tuition for Senior Secondary education, which burdens families, making it hard for many children to continue their studies. Although high education expands, many may seek technical or marine training after Junior Secondary education. Some other children will study in other countries if they want to achieve a university degree, and many of them may choose the University of the South Pacific in Fiji.
