Martyrdom of Imam Jafar

The Martyrdom of Imam Jafar is a public holiday in Iran, and it falls on the 25^th of the month Shawwāl, which is the 10^th month in the Islamic calendar.

The Martyrdom of Imam Jafar commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Jafar, who was born on April 23, 702 and died on December 14, 765 (or Shawwal 25, 148). He was the 6^th imam of Twelver and Ismaili Shia.

He inherited the position of an imam in his mid-thirties after the death of his father, the fifth Imam. He was the founder of the Jafari school of jurisprudence, which trained about four thousand students.
