Tassoua

Tassoua is the day before Ashura, and the ninth day of Muharram, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The first day of Muharram marks the beginning of a new Islamic year.

Tassoua is a day that celebrates the bravery of Abbas ibn Ali in the Battle of Karbala in Shia communities. The Battle of Karbala was a military engagement in Karbala, in present Iraq, between Muhammad's grandson, Husayn, and a larger military force of Yazid I. The battle is marked as the event that separated Sunni and Shi'a Islam, and it is particularly central to Shi'a Muslim belief.

Husayn ibn Ali is a son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muhammad's daughter Fatimah, and the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Abbas ibn Ali is the brother of Husayn ibn Ali, and he served as the standard-bearer in the Battle of Karbala. He was famous for his courage and bravery as a warrior and was considered a fearless hero.

Abbas ibn Ali died in the Battle of Karbala on the day of Ashura (10 Muharram).
