Independence Day (Niger)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Niger, observed on August 3 yearly. The holiday commemorates when Niger gained independence from France on August 3, 1960.

Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. Remains found in the area indicated that people inhabited the territory since prehistory.

In the mid-15th century, Europeans started to build trading posts along the coastline of West Africa, and by the 19th century, Europeans began to expand onto the continent's interior. The French military territory of Niger was created in 1904, and the boundaries of Niger were finalized in the 1930s.

Nazi Germany occupied the French mainland during World War II, and Niger became one member of the French Union. Following the collapse of the Fourth Republic in 1958, Niger became one of the autonomous states in the French community. On August 3, 1960, Niger declared independence from the French community. Hamani Diori became the first President of Niger.
