Republic Day (Niger)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Niger on December 18 yearly. The holiday commemorates the founding of the Republic of Niger.

Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. Remains foundĀ in the area indicated that people inhabited the territory since prehistory.

In the 19th century, Europeans began to expand onto the interior of the continent. The French military territory of Niger was created in 1904, and the boundaries of Niger were finalized in the 1930s.

Following the collapse of the Fourth Republic, a referendum on the new constitution of France was held in Niger in 1958. The new French constitution gave options to Niger either to become part of the new French community with more autonomy or become an independent country.

The voters favored being part of the French community, and Niger gained more autonomy with self-government. On December 18, 1958, under Hamani Diori, Niger became an autonomous Republic, although independence was achieved on August 3, 1960.
