Independence Day (Georgia)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Georgia, and it is observed on May 26 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Georgia declared independence from the Russian Empire on May 26, 1918.

In 1795, the Qajar dynasty of Iran invaded Georgia and established Persian rule over Georgia. In 1801, the Emperor of Russia signed a decree on the incorporation of Georgia, and Georgia was incorporated into the Russian Empire.

Following the Russian Revolution in October 1917, the Russian Empire was dissolved. Three nations Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, Georgia declared independence on May 26, 1918.

However, the independence only lasted less than 3 years, and the Red Army invaded and occupied Georgia in 1921. In 1978, Soviet power and Georgian nationalism clashed when Moscow ordered to change the status of Georgia's official language, which led to the Independence Restoration on April 9, 1991.
