Day of the Sun

Day of the Sun is a public holiday in North Korea, observed on April 15 each year. The holiday celebrates the birthday of Kim Il-sung, who was the founder and Eternal President of North Korea.

Kim Il-sung was born on April 15, 1912, and moved to China in 1925, where he got his education. After World War II, he returned to North Korea from the Soviet Union and was the Chairman and General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. From 1949 to 1994, he was the country's leader for almost 46 years.

On July 8, 1994, Kim Il-sung died from a sudden heart attack at home, and his son Kim Jong-il became the second Supreme Leader of North Korea. Kim Jong-il's birthday, the Day of the Shining Star, is also a national holiday.

Kim Il-sung's birthday has been an official holiday in North Korea since 1968, and it was renamed Day of the Sun in 1997. Day of the Sun is the most important national holiday in North Korea.
