National Day (North Korea)

National Day, also known as the Day of the Foundation of the Republic, is a public holiday in North Korea, and it is observed on September 9 each year.

National Day celebrates the anniversary when the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was established on September 9, 1948. In 1910, the Japanese forced Korea to sign the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1910, and Korea became a colony of Japan. Many independence movements, including the Independence Movement Day in 1919, took place across the country during Japanese rule.

In 1945, the Allies liberated the Korean Peninsula, and Korea finally opposed Japanese colonization. Following the liberation, a communist Soviet military regime was set up in northern Korea, and Americans controlled the south. On September 9, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was proclaimed, with Kim Il-sung being the head of the cabinet of North Korea.
