Day of the Shining Star is a public holiday in North Korea, observed on February 16 yearly. The holiday celebrates the birthday of Kim Jong-il, who served as the second Supreme Leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011.
Kim Jong-il was born on February 16, 1941, and in 1982, he was made of the Seventh Supreme People's Assembly, which became the sign of the heir apparent of North Korea. He became the Supreme Leader on July 8, 1994, after the death of his father Kim Il-sung. On December 17, 2011, he died of a suspected heart attack at 70.
