Military Foundation Day celebrates the anniversary when the Korean People's Revolutionary Army (KPRA) was founded on April 25, 1932, the name of the Korean units of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. Various anti-Japanese volunteer armies formed the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army in 1931.
Korean People's Revolutionary Army was the predecessor of the modern Korean People's Army (KPA), formally established on February 8, 1948. Military Foundation Day has been an official holiday in North Korea since 1996.
