Thanksgiving Day (Liberia)

Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in Liberia, and it is observed on the first Thursday of November each year.

Liberia is a country located in West Africa. In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the United States to settle free people of color in Africa because of racial discrimination. In 1822, the American Colonization Society (ACS) began sending free people of color to Liberia to establish a colony. The settlers declared independence and promulgated a constitution on July 26, 1847. When settlers arrived in Africa, they also brought the American culture and traditions, including the Thanksgiving celebration.

However, Thanksgiving Day in Liberia is slightly different from the celebrations in the United States. On holiday, people usually attend a church service and give thanks to the Almighty God for all the blessings, especially the peace and safety of the country. It is also a holiday to celebrate with families and friends with traditional food and music. Different from the Americans, Liberians will eat chicken instead of turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
