Liberia is a country located in West Africa. In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the United States to settle free people of color in Africa due to racial discrimination. As a result, the American Colonization Society (ACS), formed in 1816, began sending free people of color to Liberia in 1922.

Joseph Roberts was born on March 15, 1809. On February 9, 1829, he moved to Africa with his family. The American Colonization Society (ACS) appointed him vice governor in 1839.

Roberts became the governor of Liberia after the first governor died in 1841. In 1946, the legislature called for the independence referendum, in which voters favored independence. Following the referendum, Liberia declared independence on July 26, 1847.

Roberts won the first presidential election on October 5, 1847, and served as the first President of Liberia from 1847 to 1856. He won the election again and became the seventh President in 1972. He died on February 24, 1876, two months after his second presidential term.
