Victory over Genocide Day

Victory over Genocide Day is a public holiday in Cambodia, and it is observed on January 7 each year.

Victory over Genocide Day commemorates the end of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. Supported by the Chinese Communist Party, the Khmer Rouge took power in 1975 and tried to turn Cambodia into a socialist agrarian republic.

The cities were emptied, and people were forced to relocate to labor camps in the countryside, where mass executions, forced labor, and physical abuse were rampant. In 1978, the Vietnamese military invaded Cambodia and ended the Khmer Rouge in January 1979.

From 1975 to 1979, it is estimated that 1.5 to 2 million people died from the Khmer Rouge's policies, nearly a quarter of Cambodia's 1975 population.
