Victory Day (Mozambique)

Victory Day is a public holiday in Mozambique, observed on September 7 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Lusaka Accord agreement was signed on September 7, 1974, which led to the country's independence in 1975.

Mozambique became Portugal's colony in the early 16th century. After World War II, many European nations granted independence to their colonies, and the independence movement in Mozambique developed rapidly. In 1962, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) was formed and began the fight for independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

The Mozambican War of Independence started on September 25, 1964, when attempts at peaceful negotiation by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) were abandoned. The Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) managed to maintain friendly relations with the Soviet Union and China and received support from both during the war of independence.

On September 7, 1974, the Lusaka Accord agreement was signed, and the war ended with a ceasefire on September 8, 1974. The agreement provided for a complete handover of power to the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and led to independence on June 25, 1975.
