Independence Day (Mozambique)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Mozambique on June 25 each year. The holiday commemorates when Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese rule in 1975.

Portuguese explorers arrived at Mozambique in 1498, and several colonies were built, including Mozambique, with Portugal's influence in East Africa growing. After World War II, many European nations granted independence to their colonies, and the independence movement in Mozambique developed rapidly.

In 1962, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) was formed by merging several existing nationalist groups and began fighting for the independence of Mozambique from Portuguese colonial rule. The Mozambique Liberation Front managed to maintain friendly relations with the Soviet Union and China and received support from both countries during the war of independence.

Mozambique achieved its independence on June 25, 1975, and ended 470 years of Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique. The Mozambique Liberation Front established the People's Republic of Mozambique, a one-party state based on socialist principles. The one-party state was changed in 1994 when the first multiparty elections were held in Mozambique.
