Peace and Reconciliation Day (Mozambique)

Peace and Reconciliation Day is a public holiday in Mozambique on October 4 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Mozambican Civil War ending on October 10, 1992.

Mozambique became Portugal's colony in the early 16th century. In 1962, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) was formed and began the fight for independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

The Mozambican War of Independence started on September 25, 1964, when attempts at peaceful negotiation by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) were abandoned. The independence war lasted almost 10 years until September 8, 1974, when the Lusaka Accord agreement was signed, in which the Portuguese decided to transfer power to FRELIMO without a referendum or elections.

Soon after independence, the Mozambique Liberation Front established the People's Republic of Mozambique, a one-party state based on socialist principles. Numerous political parties sprung up and vied for power with FRELIMO, leading to the Mozambican Civil War in 1976. The war lasted 16 years until October 4, 1992, when the Rome General Peace Accords were signed.
