Victory Day (Estonia)

Victory Day is a public holiday in Estonia, and it is observed on June 23 each year. The holiday celebrates the victory of the Battle of Cēsis on June 23, 1919. Soon after the declaration of independence of Estonia, on February 24, 1918, the German Empire invaded Estonia. Germany returned power to Estonia in November 1918 after World War I. However, the Soviet forces invaded Estonia in late November 1918, which started the Estonian War of Independence: against Bolshevist Russia to the east front and against the Baltic German forces to the south front.

The battle of Cēsis was decisive in the Estonian War of Independence, and it was fought near Cēsis between the German units and the Estonian-Latvian allies from June 19 to 23, 1919. The Estonian-Latvian allies won the battle on June 23, 1919.
