Victory Day is a public holiday in Bangladesh, and it is observed on December 16 each year. The holiday commemorates the victory of the Bangladesh forces over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
British India was divided into two independent dominion states: India and Pakistan in 1947. The Dominion of Pakistan was made of two parts at that time: the western part (now the Islamic Republic of Pakistan) and the eastern part (now the People's Republic of Bangladesh). However, the military and political services were dominated by personnel from the western wing.
On March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, which started the guerilla war against the Pakistan Army. The war lasted 9 months from March 26, 1971 to December 16, 1971, and resulted in the independence of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
