Independence Day is a public holiday in Bangladesh, and it is observed on March 26 each year. The holiday commemorates the independence from Pakistan on March 26, 1971 by the leader of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In 1970, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his party won the election in East Pakistan, however, Pakistan was dominated by West Pakistan and refused to hand over the power to him. This resulted in a spirited struggle for independence in East Pakistan.
On March 26, 1971, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, which started the guerilla war against the Pakistan Army. The war lasted 9 months from March 26, 1971 to December 16, 1971, and resulted in the independence of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
