Victory Day (Afghanistan)

Victory Day is a public holiday in Afghanistan, and it is observed on April 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the day when Mujahideen rebel forces overthrew the Communist regime in 1992.

In 1978, the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) seized power during the Saur Revolution and established a communist country, the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, which led to the outbreak of the Civil War.

The United States and Pakistan supported the Mujahideen Resistance, while the Soviet Union supported the communist Afghanistan government. The Soviet Army invaded the country on December 24, 1979 to support the ruling PDPA and withdrew its troops on February 15, 1989.

After the withdrawal of the Soviet troops, another Afghan Civil War between the PDPA power and Mujahideen groups continued for 3 years. On April 28, 1992, the Mujahideen groups proclaimed victory and overthrew the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
