Santa Marian Kamalen Day (Guam)

Santa Marian Kamalen Day is a public holiday in Guam, and it is observed on December 8 each year.

Santa Marian Kamalen Day commemorates the patron saint of Guam Santa Marian Kamalen, also known as Our Lady of Camarin, or Dulce Nombre.

Guam Santa Marian Kamalen is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it is an image made of molave wood and ivory. The image is approximately 28 inches and 48 pounds. Although its origins are unknown, the legends had been passed generations through the oral tradition.

According to the legend, one fisherman saw the statue floating in the water, accompanied by crabs with votive candles between their claws. The image was then stored in a nearby infantry compound after and gained the title of Kamalen which means barracks.

The image survived World War II and the 1902 earthquake in Guam, and now it is enshrined at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica.
