Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal public holiday in the United States, and it is observed on the third Monday of January each year.

The holiday marks the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., who advocated nonviolent means for racial segregation and successfully protested racial discrimination.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929, and he was a Baptist minister and civil rights leader. He was an important figure in the American civil rights movement in the middle of the 1950s, however, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
