Republic Day (Slovakia)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Slovakia, and it is observed on January 1 each year.

Republic Day commemorates the anniversary when Czechoslovakia was peacefully separated into two sovereign states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993.

Czechoslovakia was long part of the the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and declared the independence when the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed at the end of Word War I. During World War II, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. Czechoslovakia then became a satellite state of the Soviet Union and the country was under Communist rule until late 1989, when the country became a democracy again through the Velvet Revolution.
