Constitution Day is a public holiday in Slovakia, and it is observed on September 1 each year.
Constitution Day commemorates the anniversary when the constitution of Slovakia was passed by the Slovak National Council on September 1, 1992. The constitution went to effect one month later on October 1, 1992.
The former country of Czechoslovakia became a satellite state of the Soviet Union after World War II, and was under the Communist rule until late 1989, when the country became a democracy again through the Velvet Revolution. On January 1, 1993, the country was separated into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
With the establishment of Slovakia, all parts of the constitution came into effect from January 1, 1993.
