Republic Day (Iraq)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Iraq, and it is observed on July 14 each year.

Republic Day commemorates the anniversary when the Iraqi republic established, which was also the day when the Hashemite monarchy was overthrown in Iraq through the July 14 Revolution in 1958.

The Hashemites are the royal family of Jordan. In August 1921, the British installed Hashemite King Faisal I as the client ruler of the British Mandate of Iraq. The July 14 Revolution led by Abd al-Karim Qasim resulted in the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy. During the uprising, King Faisal II and Prince 'Abd al-Ilah were killed.

The Iraqi Republic was established in 1958 after the July 14 Revolution, and Abd al-Karim Qasim came to power as the Prime Minister until 1963, when he was overthrown and executed in the Ramadan Revolution.
