National Day (Iraq)

National Day is a public holiday in Iraq, and it is observed on October 3 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Iraq gained independence from the British in 1932.

Iraq was under Ottoman rule from 1533 to 1918 when World War I was over. During World War I, the Ottoman Empire sided with Germany and the Central Powers and was defeated by the Allies in 1918. The Ottoman Empire was then divided after, and the United Kingdom took control of Iraq.

In August 1921, the British installed Hashemite King Faisal I as the client ruler of the British Mandate of Iraq. In 1932, Iraq gained independence from the British, however, the British retained military bases and local militia in Iraq. The July 14 Revolution in 1958 led by Abd al-Karim Qasim resulted in the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy and the establishment of the Iraqi Republic.
