Republic Day (Brazil)

Republic Day, also known as Proclamation of the Republic, is a public holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on November 15 each year. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the first Brazilian Republic in 1889.

In 1808, after Napoleon invaded Portugal, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil and formed the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves in 1815. With the outbreak of the Liberal Revolution of 1820, Pedro I's father, King John VI, returned to Portugal in April 1821 and left Dom Pedro I to rule Brazil as regent.

With the fall of Napoléon on September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro I proclaimed Brazil's independence and established the Brazilian empire. In 1931, Pedro I left Brazil for Europe, and Pedro II ascended the throne at 5.

On November 15, 1889, Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca and the republicans led a military coup and ended the monarchy. He became the first President of Brazil.
