Independence Day (Brazil)

Independence Day, also known as Sete de Setembro, is a public holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on September 7 each year. The holiday celebrates Brazil's Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves on September 7, 1822.

In 1808, after Napoleon invaded Portugal, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil and formed the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves in 1815. With the outbreak of the Liberal Revolution of 1820, Pedro I's father, King John VI, returned to Portugal in April 1821 and left Dom Pedro I to rule Brazil as regent.

With the fall of Napoléon on September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro I proclaimed Brazil's independence and established the Brazilian empire.
