Republic Day (Armenia)

Republic Day is a public holiday in Armenia, and it is observed on May 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the First Armenian Republic was established in 1918.

Before World War I, Armenia was in two parts: Eastern Armenia and Western Armenia. Western Armenia was under the Ottoman rule, while Eastern Armenia was under the Russian rule.

In February 1918, Russian-controlled Eastern Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, three nations declared independence, and Armenia declared independence as the First Armenian Republic on May 28, 1918.

However, the independence only lasted a short time, and the Red Army invaded Armenia on December 2, 1920, and proclaimed it the Soviet Republic. Armenia regained its independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Empire.
