Army Day (Armenia)

Army Day is a public holiday in Armenia, and it is observed on January 28 each year. The holiday is in honor of the troops of the Armed Forces of Armenia.

In February 1918, Russian-controlled Eastern Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, all three nations declared independence, and Armenia declared independence as the Republic of Armenia on May 28, 1918.

However, independence only lasted a short time. The Red Army invaded Armenia on December 2, 1920, and proclaimed it the Soviet Republic. As part of the Soviet Union, the Armenian soldiers and all units of the Soviet Army celebrated Defender of the Fatherland Day until the collapse of the Soviet Empire in 1991.

On January 28, 1992, the Armed Forces of Armenia was formally established after the modern Republic of Armenia became independent in 1991. The Armed Forces of Armenia can be divided into two branches: the Ground Forces and the Air Force and Air Defense Forces. Armenia has no navy being a landlocked country.
