Picnic Day is a regional holiday in Northern Territory, Australia, and it is observed on the first Monday of August each year.
Picnic Day originated from the railway Picnic Day event by railway employees working on the North Australia Railway, which started in the late 1800s, although there is no record for the date of the first event.
Picnic Day became less popular in the 1920s, but the celebration was revived in 1936. At that time, there was a train that carried people to the different points along the Adelaide River from other places for the picnic.
The Harts Range Races in Central Australia are one of the important traditions on Picnic Day, and it was first inspired by horse racing in 1946.
