National Unification Day (Liberia)

National Unification Day, also known as Integration Day, is a public holiday in Liberia, and it is observed on May 14 each year.

In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the United States to settle free people of color in Africa because of racial discrimination. As a result, the American Colonization Society (ACS) was formed in 1816 to support the migration of free African Americans to Africa.

In 1822, the American Colonization Society (ACS) began sending free people of color to Liberia to establish a colony. By 1867, over 13,000 people emigrated from the United States and the Caribbean to Liberia.

The American settlers believed they were culturally and educationally superior to the indigenous peoples. As a result, they developed a political system with an elite minority and excluded natives from economic and political opportunities, which increased the tension between the American settlers and the Indigenous people.

William Tubman served as the 19th President of Liberia from 1944 to 1971 and initiated a policy to reduce the social and political differences between the Americo-Liberians and the indigenous Liberians. In 1960, the Act was passed by the Legislature, declaring May 14 National Unification Day.
