Memorial Day (South Korea)

Memorial Day is a public holiday in South Korea on June 6 each year. The holiday commemorates those South Koreans who sacrificed their lives during the military services, including the Korean War and many other wars South Koreans fought.

The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, while the United Nations supported South Korea. The war began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea, and it ended on July 27, 1953, with approximately 3 million war fatalities, including civilians.

Memorial Day was first observed in South Korea in 1956, 3 years after the Korean War. On Memorial Day, a siren rings throughout the country at 10 am, which is the time for people to stop their work and study and to keep silent for one minute to pray for those deceased in the military services.
