The Melbourne Cup is the most famous annual Thoroughbred horse race which is held on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. It is a race for horses 3 years old and over with a running distance of 3,200 meters, which is the same distance as the Adelaide Cup.
The Melbourne Cup has a long history with the first race held in 1861. On November 7, 1861, 17 horses contested the first Melbourne Cup, and the prize at that time was 710 gold sovereigns and a hand-beaten gold watch. In 2020, the prize money has been growing to $8 million, and the first 12 past the post received the prize.
