Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle Day

Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle Day is a public holiday in North Macedonia on October 23 each year. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization in 1893.

The Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe. The territory was under different rules of the Bulgarian, Byzantine, and Serbian Empires in the past centuries. In the mid-14th century, the Ottoman Empire occupied North Macedonia until 1912.

The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization was a secret revolutionary society founded in 1893 when North Macedonia was under the Ottoman Empire. The organization fought for the freedom of Macedonia to gain autonomy for the Macedonia region from the Ottoman Empire.

On August 2, 1903, Macedonian Revolutionary Struggle Day organized the Ilinden Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, which led to the establishment of the Krusevo Republic. Although the republic existed for only 10 days, the republic was one of the first modern-day republics and an important milestone in the revolutionary movement to the creation of the modern independent Macedonian state.
