Liberation Day (Falkland Islands)

Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Falkland Islands, and it is observed on June 14 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Falklands War ended in 1982.

The Falkland Islands is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 300 miles off the southern tip of Argentina. The islands had been a British Crown colony since 1840; however, Argentina tried to gain control through diplomatic efforts in the following years.

The Falklands War was fought between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982. Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, and South Georgia on April 3, 1982. The United Kingdom made an amphibious assault on the islands on April 5, 1982. The war lasted 74 days until June 14, with an Argentine surrender.

During the war, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died. The conflict had a strong effect in both countries, and in Argentina, Malvinas Day is a public holiday commemorating those Argentines who died in the Falklands War.
