Lady of Altagracia Day (Dominican Republic)

Lady of Altagracia Day is a public holiday in the Dominican Republic, and it is observed on January 21 each year.

Lady of Altagracia Day commemorates the patronal image of the Virgin Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus. According to the story, a little girl had a dream where she saw Virgin Mary. She described to her father, a merchant who traveled around, and asked him to bring her an image as a gift.

After searching for a long time, his father cannot find the image until an old man overheard the story and presented him with the image of Our Lady of Altagracia. The girl hung the painting in her room; however, she found the painting moved outside under an orange tree every morning. Later, a church was built on the spot of the orange tree, and the image was displayed inside.

The painting is now in the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia, and over 800,000 pilgrims will go visit the Basilica each year.
