Duarte Day (Dominican Republic)

Duarte Day is a public holiday in the Dominican Republic, and it is observed on January 26 each year.

Duarte Day commemorates the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte, the foremost of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. Juan Duarte was born on January 26, 1813 in Santo Domingo to a Spanish father and a Dominican mother.

The Dominican Republic gained independence from Spanish rule in 1821, but the newly independent republic came under Haitian control in 1822. In 1838, Juan Pablo Duarte founded a secret society called La Trinitaria in the struggle for complete independence from the Haitian occupation.

After gaining independence in 1844, his followers supported Duarte for the presidency of the new Republic, but Duarte wanted to follow elections. However, Pedro Santana took power and became the president. Duarte was exiled to Venezuela in 1845, where he died in 1876.
