Independence Day (Liberia)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Liberia, and it is observed on July 26 each year. The holiday commemorates when the settlers declared Independence on July 26, 1847.

Liberia is a country located in West Africa. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders had their first contact in the region from the 15th to 17th century. In the early 19th century, there was a movement in the United States to settle free people of color in Africa because of racial discrimination. As a result, the American Colonization Society (ACS) was formed in 1816 to support the migration of free African Americans to Africa.

In 1822, the American Colonization Society (ACS) began sending free people of color to Liberia to establish a colony. Many emigrants died due to tropical diseases. By 1867, over 13,000 people had emigrated to Liberia from the United States and the Caribbean.

The settlers declared independence and promulgated a constitution on July 26, 1847. Liberia was Africa's first modern republic being claim its independence.
